V Chute with oneway gate (cross section)

GRANDIN LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS

Updated March 2023

For use on feedlots and ranches where a variety of large cattle and calves are handled. The V shape prevents the cattle from turning around. Do NOT use the V chute at slaughter plants or in dairies. For slaughter plants use a chute with straight sides spaced 30 in. (76 cm) apart. The oneway gate design can also be used in a chute with straight sides. Build a square oneway gate. For slaughter plants the chute fence should be 5'6" (170 cm) to 6'(183 cm) high.

Notes:

  1. If the walkway is more than 24 in.(61 cm) off the ground, a handrail must be installed for worker safety.

  2. For breeds that have wide broad bodies, such as Angus, the bottom should be widened to 20 in (50 cm).

  3. For very broad Angus cattle and other large breeds the V chute must be widened 20 in (50 cm) at the bottom and 36 in (91 cm) at the top. During the last 10 years many beef cattle have become wider. The pivot point of the oneway gate will need to be raised about 8 in (20 cm) for tall Holstein steers.
